Gaelic League :: Essays Papers
Gaelic League What are the Irish known for? Most people would automatically think of some trivial fact about something like the potato famine, others the stereotypical views of the Irish drinking habits, and undoubtedly good old Irish American pubs would definitely come to mind. Although these are definitely interesting parts of the Irish history there are many other aspects to this unique heritage that truly capture the spirit of the Irish tradition. The Gaelic League was started with the founding of the Gaelic Athletic Association. This group founded in 1884 in attempts to promote and maintain Irish sports, helped to spawn the idea of Irish nationalism which eventually personified itself into organizations such as the Gaelic League. The Gaelic League was founded in 1893 by Douglas Hyde and Ed MacNeil to spread the Irish language (Hachey and McCaffery 14). Formed in Barnesmore where language classes were held in the national school; the support of both Catholics and Protestants made it poss ible to branch off to other areas (Oââ¬â¢Connor 37). After the devastation of the potato famine and the implications of the home rule; both the Gaelic League and its predecessor the Gaelic Athletic Association had the common goal of bringing forth Irish nationalism in a country that desperately needed national pride. This movement for national pride had some success, but not before the failure that preceded it. There are a few reasons that this move, for national pride, produced failure one was the reputation of the Irish and another was the pressure of politics put on the different associations. The Irish language was considered to be a peasantââ¬â¢s language (Oââ¬â¢Connor 87). Because of this the people of country that were poor and not educated in the language did not think it was worth spending money to learn. Tthe people in the country that had the money to learn the language normally did not want to learn the language for the mere fact it was considered to be a peasants language. Another reason for some of the failure that this movement attained is due to the political pressure created because of the nature of the movement itself. The two founders of the Gaelic League Hyde and McNeil never wanted the movement to become political (Gavin 56). However, this was inevitable. The mo vement caused a split in the people, those who were educated in the language and those who were not educated in the language (Hopkins 129).

Beta Case Study
25721 Investment Management BMC Case Study Student Name: Junwei Wang Student ID: 11516655 Class Time: 6 p. m. ââ¬â 9 p. m. Tuesday Lecturer: Wing Bui Table of content Q 1. 1 Q 2. 1 Q 3. 2 Q 4. 2 Q 5. 3 Beta Management Company I. Case Background Beta Management Company was founded in 1988 by Ms. Wolfe. Beta Management Company is a small investment management company based in a Boston suburb. Beta Management Company was successful in 1989 and 1990. This success had brought in enough new money to double the size of the company. However, Ms.Wolfe had lost some potential new clients who had thought it unusual that Beta Management used only an index mutual fund and picked none of its own stocks. Sarah Wolfe was considering Betaââ¬â¢s new goal and directions for coming year. II. A. Ms. Wolfe decided to follow ââ¬Å" indexâ⬠to adjust equity market exposure. This is a good strategy due to that at the beginning of the foundation of the company, the size of her account was small a nd there were no much money for her to take a risk. The strategy she followed was the lowest risky way. Ms.Wolfe kept a majority of Betaââ¬â¢s funds in no-load, low-expense index funds, adjusting the level of market exposure between 50% and 99% of Betaââ¬â¢s funds in an attempt to ââ¬Å"time the marketâ⬠. B. Ms. Wolfe now has decided to increase her equity exposure to 80% with the purchase of one of the California R. E. I. T. and Brown Group, Inc. While Ms. Wolfe wanted to extend her business, she found that some potential clients thought it unusual that Beta Management used only an index mutual fund and picked none of its own stocks, Ms. Wolfe was engaging her new strategy. Unlike before, Beta increase the equity exposure from 50% to 80%.Beta used to have 1% to 50% debt and 50% to 99% equity. Now, the portfolio will become as 20% debt and 80% equity. And also based on the performance of the two stocks, they are both unsteady stocks which mean that the risk of the Betaâ â¬â¢s portfolio will be increased. However, we can also found that the return will be much higher. C. Ms. Wolfe is a contrarian investor. Base on the performance of the two stocks, these two stocks were unsteady and the losses rate is much higher than the return rate. III. a. California R. E. I. T. was a real estate investment trust.Their stock had been badly damaged by the ââ¬Å"World seriesâ⬠earthquake of 1989. Base on the Figure 1, it is easily found that the performance of the stock is volatile. Although the trend is similar with the index trend, California R. E. I. T. was still in a bad position. b. Brown Group Inc. was one of the largest manufacturers and retailers of branded footwear, and had been undergoing a major restructuring program since 1989. The stock performed steady and positive. However, there was a significant drop in late 1989 and late 1990. IV. a. The average return of California R. E. I. T. is -2. 7% and the average return of Brown Group Inc. is -0. 67 %. The standard deviation of California R. E. I. T. is 0. 092307 and the standard deviation of Brown Group Inc. is 0. 081668. The standard deviation of S&P index is 0. 46036. Compare with SP500, California R. E. I. T. is more risker. b. In portfolio SPC, the standard deviation is0. 046526 and in SPB the standard deviation is 0. 046419. And the incremental risk of SPC and SPB over a portfolio with 99% in the SP500 and 1% in a risk-free asset are 0. 409504 and 0. 409611. From the data we can see that the California R. E. I. T. affect the portfolio more.The SP500 index is the safest stock and the California R. E. I. T. is still the risker stock. c. The regression of California R. E. I. T. ââ¬â¢s monthly return on index return was attached as Appendix 1. The coefficient is 0. 011856. The regression of Brown Group Inc. ââ¬â¢s monthly return on index return was attached as Appendix 2. The coefficient is 0. 013509. We can still find that the California R. E. I. T. is risker stock tha t affect the portfolio more. d. The return of SPC equals to 99%*E(Rindex)+1%*E(Rc) and the return of SPB equals to 99%*E(Rindex) + 1%*E(Rb) and the return of risk-free portfolio is 99%* E(Rindex) + 1%*E(Rf).The excess return for SPC is 1%*E(Rf) -1%*E(Rc) and the excess return for SPB is 1%*E(Rf) -1%*E(Rb). From the expression, we can find that the excess return for each unit is the difference between the expected return of risk-free asset and the expected return of the stock. V. Summary * If the size of account is small, the safer way to maintain and adjust equity market exposure is ââ¬Å"indexâ⬠. * Create portfolio smarter; do not invest all money in single area. * The excess return of the stock is difference between the return rates. * When investing, index will be a good indication to predict the stockââ¬â¢s future trend.

Discuss the Role of the Supervisor in Organizational Planning
Course Title: Supervisory Management Submission Date: 22 October 2012 One Stop Production Companyââ¬â¢s Report TABLE OF CONTENTS Summary of the Case3 Statement of the Problem4 Core Problem4 Satellite Problems6 Recommendations 16 Reasonable Assumptions19 Bibliography 20 Summary of the caseOne Stop Production is a garment manufacturer specializing in the production of school uniforms. Ms. Susan Holford shared the management of the business with her father Mr. Amos Holford over the past two years and will assume full responsibility for leadership of the company upon his retirement. She has a team of supervisors whose length of tenure with the business exceeds her own involvement with One Stop Production, and in general employees have performed the same functions from the businessââ¬â¢ inception. The leadership styles of Susan and her father differ drastically.Motivated by her intention to manage the business in a different manner than her father, Susan is overwhelmed by the diffic ulties facing her ââ¬â particularly the declining production and sales figures, and what she views as the refusal of the employees to improve production levels. This report outlines the challenges facing the business and its new manager Susan. It will first summarize the existing problems, and then establish specifically the core problem and satellite problems that exist; where necessary reasonable assumptions will be drawn and supported by evidence from the business.The report will then provide recommendations that will empower Susan, as leader, to chart the future course of the organization. This will be followed by a conclusion that unifies the various elements of the report. STATEMENT OF THE Problem Within different organizations one will find varying organizational structures and environments which contribute to the overall organizational culture. Entwined in here are the management and leadership styles, values and beliefs that exist within the organization.As this case an alysis was thoroughly investigated, we discovered that the One Stop Production Company had some major problems (Please refer to Exhibit 1. 0). After careful consideration and collaboration it has been established that the core problem which hinders the success of the company is ââ¬Å"Ineffective Leadership and Organization Managementâ⬠. Whilst the satellite problems include: ? Poor Organizational Structure ?Poor Management * No Clear Goals ?Ineffective Communication CORE PROBLEM Ineffective Leadership In this company, we will examine the leadership skills within the organisation.A leaderââ¬â¢s role is to set the direction for establishing a clear vision by taking risks, sharing and communicating the vision with others so that they will follow willingly. It also includes motivating and inspiring staff by expanding energy through producing change, aligning contingencies by bringing everyone together and balancing the conflicting interests of all members or stakeholders. (www. businessdictionary. com) ââ¬Å"The art of getting employees together on a common platform and extracting the best out of them refers to effective organisation management. â⬠(www. managementstudyguide. com) SATELLITE PROBLEMSPoor Organisational Structure An organisational structure defines how job tasks are formally divided grouped and coordinated (Robbins & Judge 2010, p. 488). Within the One Stop Production Company the organizational structure was not clearly defined which often resulted in conflicts due to mixed instructions. Mr. Holford, although delegating the majority of functions and running of the operation to his supervisors, still constantly moved around giving random instructions to different employees regardless of department. Ms. Holford wants to restructure the organization having roles and job functions clearly defined.In addition she intends to appoint specific supervisors to specific departments which would define the levels of authority ââ¬â Line or func tional; allowing both employees ad superiors to know who was responsible for what. Poor Management Management involves coordinating and overseeing the work activities of others so that their activities are completed efficiently and effectively (Robbins & Coulter p. 6). ââ¬Å"Ms. Holford never found the time to pursue management because her father had left the management of all three areas of the organization largely up to herâ⬠Ms.Holford exhibits a type of autocratic style of management and does not trust the knowledge of the staff. This lack of trust has resulted in her inability to select specific supervisors to specific department. She has very good ideas and intentions for the organization however a lack of management training proves to be a major deficiency. She does not have the co-operation of the workers and as a result her suggestions are not acted on. Ms. Holford believes the selection of a manager to run things for her is imperative however she does not know how to go about this process.Ineffective Communication Communication is ââ¬Ëthe transfer and understanding of meaning. It serves four major functions within a group or organization; control, motivation, emotional expression and information. ââ¬â¢ As seen in this case the flow of communication serves one main purpose and that is control. Employees are made aware of Ms. Holfordââ¬â¢s suggestions and intentions at meetings however there appears to be no facility for feedback or input from the employees. The lack of trust in the workersââ¬â¢ knowledge results in a ââ¬Ëone wayââ¬â¢ flow of communication. No Clear Goals / Targets The goals of the organization have not been clearly defined and relayed to the workers. The levels of production and sales which are being sought have not been laid out to the workers. RECOMMENDATIONS * Management and Leadership training for Ms. Susan Holford. This is very important so as to develop within her the skills which are necessary for her to manage the organization as well the workers. Leadership & Learning are indispensible to each other. It is known that effective Leaders are not always born but can be trained. Hire a Human Resources Manager ââ¬â Human resource managers have a key role to play to help a company achieve its objectives and run effectively. HR managers assist employees with matters relating to their employment andà also help employees with questions regarding health insurance and other benefits. Hiring and firing employees are both important functions performed by theà humanà resources department because there are certain procedures to be followed. However, a crucialà roleà ofà humanà resourcesà is to work closely with upper management as well as the staff to ensure positive company relations at all times. To assist with the hiring of the Human Resources Manager, we have attached the following document. Please see Exhibit 2. 1, 2. 2, 2. 3 and 2. 4) * Implement a five year strategic p lan ââ¬â This should include the Goal settingà theory which involves establishingà specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timelyà (S. M. A. R. Tà )à objectives. Work on the theory of goal-setting suggests that it's an effective tool for making progress by ensuring that participants in a group with a common goal are clearly aware of what is expected from them if an objective is to be achieved. Delegation of work ââ¬â A General Manager should be chosen with the overall responsible for the day to running and they would report directly to Ms. Holford. In addition specific supervisors for the various departments should be put in place to oversee the running of those departments. Training should also be organized for all supervisors. The supervisors are a direct link between management and the workers. (Please refer to Exhibit 3. 0). * Communication has to become a ââ¬Ëtwo wayââ¬â¢ process and allow for feedback from the workers. Ms.Holford must spend ti me with key supervisors and staff and learn the business, while also truly learn about the staff. She should form a committee of Management from among the key stakeholders in the Company. The Supervisors should be able to communicate any new production and sales targets to their teams directly. * Goals / Targets ââ¬â Production and Sales targets should be set and the targets should be known to all members of staff. The overall goals of the company should be clearly stated and ensure that the operation of each department coincides with the overall goals of the organization.Sales records for the past five years should be analyzed so as to pick up on trends and a comparison done with a company in a similar market. For instance sales maybe tied in to the start of the school year where for obvious reasons they will be at their highest. This research would aid in the setting of the targets and goals and also identify reasons for drops in sales at particular times. * Production Levels ââ¬â The workers have been doing the same jobs since inception.New technology may be available to increase the efficiency of some processes and the training of workers in the use of new technology or processes to increase productivity and overall job efficiency. * Staff Morale ââ¬â Despite receiving annual wage increases the employees still appear unhappy and are unwilling to improve production. Ms. Holford should pay attention to what the needs of the workers are. Look at improving the working environment, staff relations. Incentive schemes can be devised to encourage workers to produce more and build up their morale. CONCLUSIONThe members of our group believe that after thoroughly analyzing the main issues of the company, and implementation of the recommendations stated would improve the daily operations and production at the One Stop Production. However it should be noted that these recommendations have to be implemented overtime and the changing process should be a gradu al one as from the case it appears that the employees are very resistant to sudden change. It should be gradually incorporated into the activities and employees should be clearly shown the importance of it to the company and also the benefits that can be reaped through their assistance.BIBLOGRAPHY Kotter, John P. Ugolino and His Sons
He won the Prix de Rome in 1854 which enabled him to live in Rome (1856 ââ¬â 1862). During that time he was influenced by the works of Italian sculptors of the Renaissance period such as Michelangelo, Donatello, and Andrea Del Verrocchio. He also started to increase his focus of studies on complex sculptures and bas-reliefs. His passion led him to start carving several pieces on marble before the famous work of art ââ¬Å"Ugolino and His Sonsâ⬠. Carpeaux was considered as one of the mainstream artists in Eclecticism.This movement wanted to exceed Neoclassicism and Romanticism and also described the ombination, in a single work, of elements from different historical styles. Carpeaux received many honors during his lifetime until two months before he died prematurely of cancer at the age of 48 in Courbevoie in 1875 CE. The sculpture snows (Figure 1 a man sitting on a stone cu tted witn chains in his legs. The man's facial expressions seemed as grief while biting the tip of som e of his fingers. The wrinkles on top of his eyes with his curled toes on each other gave the sense of a clueless situation the man was put in.Surrounding him, there're four ifferent-aged kids; two of them on the left side of their father's position, as they gave the emotion of looking at their father begging. And on the right side, there're the two other kids where the smallest kid fell on the ground looking dead. The sculpture depicts the tale of a traitor who was the Count of Donoratico and was imprisoned by the archbishop Ruggieri degli Ubaldini in the late thirteenth century Oune 1288). The archbishop imprisoned Ugolino with his sons and grandsons in the ââ¬Å"Tower of Hungerâ⬠.Also, the archbishop ordered the soldiers to throw the keys of Ugolinds rison in the Arno River so that there's no way for them to be set free. They were sentenced to be left to starve in February 1289. Ugolino had this prophetic dream of the archbishop and his soldiers as the lord and huntsman kil ling the wolf the wolf cubs (Ugolino and his offspring). Ugolino had his heart-broken for hearing his sons sobbing in their sleep asking for bread. He also kept his feelings inside, he had never wept, and he used to watch his kids weeping but him feeling clueless paralyzed- thinking.Yet his offspring dreams couldn't fill their stomach. Ugolinds kids started to ook at him, wondered why he turned out to look like a stone, biting his fingers and curling his toes of one leg on top of the other one. For them, they thought that their father is starving Just like them or maybe more but for Ugolino himself, he was biting his fingers in anguish, weeping inside for not being able to feed his offspring. Therefore, they started to offer their bodies to their father so he can eat and survive.After few days, his offspring started to fall down dead one by another till the last one died on the sixth day. This part is quoted from ââ¬Å"The Divine Comedy, Vol. l: Inferno Canto 33) ââ¬â Dante Ali ghieriâ⬠. It illustrates moments of death of Ugolinds offspring and the mystery behind the possibility of Cannibalism: ââ¬Å"l calmed myself to make them less unhappy. That day we sat in silence, and the next day. O pitiless Earth! You should have swallowed us! The fourth day came, and it was on that day My Gaddo fell prostrate before my feet, Crying: Why dont you help me?
Thinking in the Workplace Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Thinking in the Workplace - Essay Example being in school bring him his own set of challenges- stress, so much work to do, running out of time, procrastination and not enough rest leading to tiredness. If he is confronted with the same set of challenges everyday, the effects could interfere with his normal functions as an individual and even be detrimental to his physical and mental health. Hence, it is important for him to take action and start to make use of an appropriate time management program that he can stick to. There have been countless time management tips for people who apparently cannot follow a regular plan to better manage their schedule and have time to finish workload and still have rest. The following is a simple five-step plan, especially devised for students like Chris. 1) Make a ââ¬Å"To doâ⬠list. Before planning out a particular schedule, determine and list down the things that you want to achieve and when they need to be done. This could be on a daily or a weekly basis and should be detailed. 2) Prioritize. After listing your goals or tasks, arrange them according to the urgency or importance. Tips-for-Boomers suggests these specific categories a) Urgent b) Important but not urgent c) Neither important nor urgent. 3) Schedule. After having prioritized the tasks, it is now time to decide when to do the job individually. It is advisable that he set or reserve a specific time frame for doing the necessary tasks, and another time frame for his leisure and recreation. 4) Reinforce and Maintain. Some time management plans do not work because they are not maintained or are hard to sustain. To help Chris in making his time management plan last, he should develop ways to reinforce his actions. One suggested way is the use of the reward system. After a few observations it is found out that Chris prefers to look at maps over verbal directions to a place. He also likes to look at pictures or paintings, and movies and is more likely to retain information presented visually. It is therefore

Casey Anthony Murder Trial Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Casey Anthony Murder Trial - Coursework Example The report, as a result, seeks to highlight a brief description of the background, charges and the ultimate trial of Casey Anthony regarding the disappearance and the subsequent death of her daughter. It also seeks to analyze the digital forensic evidence relative to the prosecutionââ¬â¢s case. Casey Anthony told the authorities that on the dusk of June 9, 2008, after departure from her work at the Universal Studios she went to her babysitter, Zenaida Fernandezââ¬â¢s, home to discover that both she and her child had disappeared. Casey Anthony informed investigators that she initiated a hunt of her own but then was unable to trace her daughter (Alvarez, 2011). Caylees corpse was found six months after being declared missing, near Caseyââ¬â¢s residence. The first computer evidence that initiated the search for Caylee Anthony was pictures of Caylee and her grandfather at a gathering. The evidence gave the exact date at which the victim was last seen, contrary to the testimony given by Casey Anthony. Contradicting information in relation to the computer forensics and Casey Anthonyââ¬â¢s statement was the 31 day period where detectives collected photographs and videos of Cay Lee, Caseyââ¬â¢s night club partying, AIM Logger chat and Casey Anthonyââ¬â¢s Cupid profile. According to Casey, Cay Lee was the frequent user of the internet and not herself. Accordingà toà further examination of the family computer, the Encase timeline function indicates the MAC times for the database itself and not individual records. As a result, as the user accesses the internet, the index file does not update the time that it is operational. A vital discovery was an AIM Logger chat that did not concern Cay Lee, Massive activity on MySpace, that goes on the entire day from 0800hrs with just an hour of the lunchtime break. The activity resumes again at 1330hrs, but according to Caseyââ¬â¢s father, Casey

Returning to school Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Returning to school - Essay Example However, this year was different. This year was the tenth anniversary of high school for our batch and a reunion had been planned in accordance with the school tradition. I was excited several days in advance for this event. The anticipation of meeting old friends and colleagues, most of whom I had lost touch with, added to the excitement. Finally the day came and I left for my school. Special arrangements were made by the school for our stay. We were greeted with music and flowers. Many of my colleagues had arrived with their spouses. I was still unmarried and single. I could have a glance at my school crushes. It was amazing to see the transformation in the people in ten years. Some so called dumb people had become millionaires and billionaires while some of the smartest guys were leading mediocre lives. A few of my colleagues had become mothers and fathers of two while the others were still taking their chances at the party. Some had become partly bald while the others were seen with a pot belly. It was heart-warming to meet old teachers who were still there. We could recognize them easily while they found it hard to do so. All of us were served a delicious dinner and drinks. Thereafter, we went on the dance floor and made a lot of fun. We took contact numbers of each other and promised to be in touch. We waved good bye to each other with heavy hearts. Returning to school after 10 years was just an amazing experience. It made me realize how far I have come in life and what has been left behind. We would plan such reunions in the future as well and try to relive the good old
